The Dancing Square

Lincoln Square
2022

The studio brief required designing a space for an imagined character (Nisho, a young activist and teacher,) in a dystopian world. The concept behind the square is to have it facilitate performance, such as dance, and singing as a form of both activism and education. My design allows Nisho and her students to be able to perform, play, and gather.

The square has expressive, almost theatrical elements to it, particularly through the framing of dramatic light and shadow, and sweeping paths of movement that progress through the site. The main exchange area is a stage, platform area, which faces Swanston Street for public interaction. A more private, interior space is carved underneath the stage for intimate meetings and rehearsals. Grassy steps that lead towards the space are used to gather, socialise, and rest
