Distortion Pavilion

Queen Victoria Gardens
2022

When conceptualising my pavilion, I visited the M_Pavilion site in the arts precinct of Melbourne for inspiration. What struck me about the atmosphere of the site in particular was its diffracted, almost patchwork-like quality. The site lies on a threshold between a serene, natural space (the Queen Victoria Park) and the densely packed, urban centre of the NGV and arts precinct. I used the Wasp plugin for Grasshopper to create a space within the pavilion that is kaleidoscopic and fantastical. The reflective panels reflect and distort the image of the surrounding site, as well as the image of the pavilions users, audience, and park goers, creating a light and playful vision of the Queen Victoria Gardens.
